day 11: arlington, va. to bristol, va.: goodbye trip!

So, today was it. We packed up our bags, loaded 'em up, and were on our way. Even before we left the boys were asking when we were coming back to Rex's house (Rex is 4, almost 5, and I think was a little shell shocked at 3 rowdy boys staying at his house when he got home from Utah yesterday, but they had fun together). As we were driving on the George Washington Memorial Highway, Will just said, "Well, goodbye trip." And a few seconds later he saw the Washington Memorial across the Potomac and said, "Goodbye big building thing."
We did have one more stop to make, since we were still trying to make up for lost time last week. It wouldn't be a complete trip without a visit to Arlington Cemetery.
This is the third time I've been here, and it is still amazing to me to see all the military headstones doting the hillsides, "standing at attention," as they like to say.
Our first stop was to President John F. Kennedy's grave, with Jackie's right next to his, and Robert E. Lee's house in the background. We were blessed with another beautiful day!
I loved the character of this tree.
Our next stop, which was also our last, was to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I could watch the soldier marching all day. We had to wait a while for the changing of the guards, but it was so worth it! These are a few of my favorites from our time there.

Iwo Jima statue...enough said. Thank you to the men and women in the service of our country, in both the past and present.
Our little side trip this morning turned out to take a lot longer than we expected, plus it took forever to find IHOP, the boys' choice for lunch. By the time we got out on the road it was after 2pm, and although the boys were dying to watch movies, they also wanted to draw pictures, so why not do both?!
We headed through the hills of Virginia, and are staying in Bristol, Va. tonight, on our way to Tennessee tomorrow. We missed seeing Woodrow Wilson's Presidential Library in Staunton, Va. by 5 minutes. Too bad, that would have been cool. You never know what you are going to find along the way. Once again, the landscape was totally different through Virginia than anything else we have seen. Finally we saw some mountains again (Blue Ridge Mountains) today. You can see what looks like clouds in the distance...
...turns out it was smoke from what we figure was a forest fire, but who knows. I didn't photoshop this picture at all--this is just the smoke, not the fire. It really was this colorful for just a few seconds and then it was over. It was amazing!! Another good day.

what a fun trip you have had! Your boys will hopefully have fond memories :)
The last picture to me looked like a storm brewing with a tiny spike coming down from the clouds, almost like the beginning of a tornado. I love the color!
